Yesterday, Erin Hamlin became the first American to win an Olympic medal in Luge. Erin and her fellow competitors made four runs each down the track on a tiny sled often achieving speeds of 85 MPH.
Her Bronze Medal winning time was 3 minutes 21.145 seconds.
The Gold Medal time was 3 minutes 19.768 seconds.
Ask your students to determine the difference in time between the gold medal and bronze medal winner. If you really want to have fun remind them that these are the total times over four runs. Have them divide the difference by four for the average difference in each run.
More Olympic Math fun to come.
