Thank you to the 5th graders of Southfield School in Shreveport, LA for these Earth Day Math Problems:

Recycling one glass bottle can power a computer for 30 minutes.  How many glass bottles do you need to produce energy for a computer for 4 days?

If recycling one glass bottle can power a computer for 30 minutes, how minutes can 65 bottles power?

If almost half of the food in the U.S. goes to waste which is approximately 3,000 pounds per second, then how many pounds will go to waste in one minute?

The average American produces more than 4 pounds of garbage per day.   Over the course of a year that  is 1,600 pounds per person.  How many pounds of garbage does a person produce in 30 years?

The recycling rate has increased from less than 10% in 1980 to more than 30% in 2011.  What percentage increase is this?

In 60 seconds how may pounds of food goes to waste in the U.S. if 3,00 pounds goes to waste per second?
